Day of Giving Back

Day of Giving BackVolunteers clean up the beach at Rosy Mound Natural Area

May 18, 1971 was our official day of incorporation and we marked our 50th anniversary with a Day of Giving Back. Over 50 volunteers gave back to our community by helping maintain gardens, trails, and natural habitats at Ottawa Sands, Spring Lake Butterfly Garden/Whistle Stop Park, and Duncan Park, and painting the pump house at Grand Haven’s iconic Musical Fountain. On Grand Haven’s beautiful beach at Rosy Mound Natural Area, a group of volunteers cleaned up litter and removed invasive species that put the native habitats at risk. Attendance was limited due to COVID restrictions, and we’re grateful to everyone who made this day special.

Sidewalk Chalk Celebration

From June 22 through July 21, we invited everyone in the community to draw what makes our community special — in chalk! People then posted photos of their chalk art to social media, tagged us, and we shared our favorite pics. We handed out over 1200 boxes of chalk to area day camps and at the Spring Lake and Grand Haven farmers markets. While this event is over, we’d still love to see your pictures, so please tag us!

Foundational Art Exhibit

Foundational was an art exhibit at the Grand Haven Community Center featuring work by local artists that celebrated places that have benefited from GHACF grants. This event was co-sponsored by the Lakeshore Visual Arts Collective and the Muskegon Museum of Art. The Grand Haven Area Community Foundation purchased twelve pieces of art that will be hung in the building at 1 South Harbor Drive in Grand Haven.

Community Book Read

In May, every second grader in our community received a copy of the book. If you don’t have a copy, you can read along with a copy purchased at the Bookman or checked out from one of our local libraries. The virtual book read for the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today?  was live on Facebook Wednesday, September 15 at 7pm – just in time for a bedtime story.

Special thanks to Shape Corporation, a component fund of the GHACF, for purchasing the books.

Hispanic Heritage Fiesta

We were proud to be the lead sponsor for the third annual Hispanic Heritage Fiesta. This year’s celebration was a full week long—September 19-25—and featured a mercado, food vendors, performances, and more! Beginning with a Parade of Flags on Sunday, September 19 and ending with an all-day Fiesta on Saturday, September 25, there was something for everyone looking to celebrate Latin American cultures.
