Excellence In Education Evening 2008

On May 5, the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation was proud to host the 22nd annual Excellence In Education Evening at Spring Lake Country Club. This special event pays tribute to two vital elements of our community's education system: students and educators. It also recognizes the importance of local citizen interest and support for education.

The students honored during this event were 74 high school seniors residing in the northwest Ottawa County area who are graduating in the top ten percent of their class. The students haled from Grand Haven High School, Spring Lake High School, Muskegon Catholic Central High School and Western Michigan Christian High School.

What makes this event so unique is that each honored student was accompanied by an educator personally chosen by the student for having a significant impact on the student's academic achievements and accomplishments. While many honored students select current or recent high school teachers, coaches, and mentors, others invite an educator from their elementary, or even kindergarten years. This evening honors those students and educators who truly represent the call to "excellence."

GHACF Chair, Don Anderson and President Ann Tabor, congratulate the students and their parents, for the dedication and hard work that brought them to this night of academic celebration.

Tim Penning, Professor of Public Relations at Grand Valley State University, was the speaker for the evening. His inspiring message to the students, sprinkled with humor and seriousness, demonstrated how the pursuit of excellence in education can lead to a life of success, joy and fulfillment.

Special thanks go to the members of the Tri-Cities garden club who gather the blooms from their gardens and have donated their first Monday morning in May, for twenty two years, to make the arrangements that decorated the tables.

For good. For ever.
